E61 Automatic mail retrieval stopped/Other mail-related issues

For some reason (unsure what I did - I think once I forced a disconnect when doing configuration or something) - my phone no longer automatically checks for mail. I saw it had turned the option off when I disconnected, so I turned it back on to check for mail every 5 minutes. Then I exited, and it didn't check.

I rebooted the phone, waited ten minutes (sent some new mail to my mailbox) and still no checks. Waited 30 minutes, nothing.

Am I doing something wrong? If I tell it to connect/retrieve new mail manually, it does work.

Do I need to manually start the mail client and leave it running in the background or something? This is really irritating me, it's the whole reason I got this phone.

Also, another issue I seem to have, when I try to send mail - the first time it fails. It asks for username/password again, I type it in, and then it sends. It asks if I want to save, and I tell it yes. It still fails the first time when I try to send another mail. This happens every time.

What can I do?

Back up your data on your memory card and do a hard reset. Your email settings shouldnt matter. If your email settings are entered incorrectly your phone should still try to auto-connect as you've set it but it just wont retrieve properly and give you an error. I'm assuming your settings are the same when it was connecting properly so just try the reset. If that doesnt work then hopefully someone else can give you a more definitive answer....but I'm assuming it will.

I agree. Do a full back up and do the hard reset.
Full Reset: (clears everything off the phone memory!! Be sure to back up your contacts!!): *#7370#, 12345 and then Yes.
