DYNO Numbers for Baggers???

Impressive figures, well done!

The final gear figure you mention is for sixth gear which is an overdrive, but I suspect direct fifth is probably still 3.18.

My wife's 2003 Dyna originally had 3.15 final gear, which at peak engine speed gave a theoretical top speed of 140mph! A year ago we fitted a SE kit to change the crank sprocket from 25T to 21T, which brough fifth down to 2.65, or a theoretical top speed of 118mph, which is much more realistic. It rolls on in top gear a treat, with only basic Stage 1 mods.

Harleys are way over-geared to keep noise levels down at the speeds they are tested. It seems to me that a valid part of what we call 'Stage 1' should be to change the gearing, to get the most out of the bike.

Well I messed that up! I should have said 3.75. The rest is OK!

I love those carburetad motors! I had a carburated '99 RK with a Mikuni, cam and Rineharts and that thing felt like it had a 95" kit. Great pure throttle response. I should have never gotten rid of that bike!

Is that what the difference is? I have a buddy of mine that has an '08 FLHX with a 103 kit and his numbers aren't nearly what you would expect them to be and not really even close to mine. How much of a difference do you think that makes?

Fifth gear, in five speed and six speed boxes, is direct, so the power losses are minimal, whereas sixth is an indirect overdrive, so power losses will be more, I would expect, although I have no idea by how much.

We could do with a volunteer who has a six-speed bike to have dyno runs done in both sixth and fifth, to see if there is any difference and how much!

Are dyno runs even done in 5th? I need to call my shop and ask them what gear mine was done in. For some reason I am thinking they run them through the first 4 gears only.

Here is my 02 Ultra 88 with SE Air Filter, PC111 and SE203 cams
Hope the pic comes through,
The tuner did this in an hour and I was happy with the results.
I am sure there are better choices available, but again at the time it was all that I had to work with.
Now it is a 95inch and no dyno results. Yet...

103" with V&H Pro Pipe, K&N high flow A/C, HD Race Tuner, Freedom gear drive cams, Fueling Rivera oil pump = a very reliable motor with 104 HP and 113 lb. ft. of torque has been a blast for 47k miles, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, Canada and Mexico, too.

Openroad, Can you give me some info on the freedom gear cams? Who makes them and what baffle in the V&H pro pipe? Did you do any modifications to the baffle? Nice torque curve.

Just had mine tuned yesterday after installing cams a few weeks back. Here's my set up: V&H header pipes, Reinhart slip-on's, RSD (stage 1) A/C, Andrews 37H chain drive cams, PCIII.

Max Power: 84.36
Max Torque: 93.60

Bone Stock...

Before and After with XIED's added then PCIII

A/F Before with XIED's After with PCIII Tuned

Final Run out after Tuned...
