Dying my hair at home?

I wanna dye my hair a lighter blonde but dont have the money to go to a salon, soo im gonna do it at home...Does anyone have any tips for first timer Hair dyers? lol Also is there any brand that u could reccomed that is easy to use and wont damage my hair? Thanks!

P.s How long should I wait before school to dye my hair so I looks its best?
