DVD extras

When I first got DVD I loved the extras, I brought the special editions, for more extras. I watched all of extras straight after the film. But now I find my self-getting board with the extras and wondering why I spend the extra money extras that I only watch the film once. I mean I will watch the film again and again but the extras I will only watch the once and then never again.

What does everyone else think?

Also what is our favourite type of extra?

How many times and when do you watch the extras?

For me it has to be a good commentary and or a

im not too bothered with the extra's, because most of them nowadays are pointless.......
Directors commentary are all i use now, or "alternative endings"..and thats only from curiosity. (obviously)

the commentary on Final Destination had me hooked on this feature.....it explains so much.....since watching that, i have to play the commentary on every dvd i get.

No I really enjoy DVD extras! Especally commentary. I think DVD and the extras was really to stop so many people buying pirates because all they'd get would be bad quality films. But of course, if they'd wait a few more months, they'd get all the extras and brilliant quality film.

:D LOL The Haylcon days of DVD. I too remember watching every little extra on the disc way back in 1999 - couldn't get enough! Now, you're lucky if I watch any of the extras at all!

I think it's a mix of three things:
1) Novelty - previously, DVD was exciting and new - not to mention a complete boon for us poor movie fans. Now, it feels like a standard practice and quite regimented (IE the novelty has worn down) :(

2)Quality - because of people dashing to grab special editions, movie companies began to make and add extras just for the sake of it - it's no longer just the best of the best; now any old piece of esoteric footage will be plonked on just to bump the runtime of the extras :( :(

3)Time - with all the extra crud they put on, you find that you can spend AGES just watching the features - time you don't really have ;) I literally doubled the runtime of The Simpsons season 4 by watching the episodes both with and without commentary (which were fairly awful this season - lots of repetition. They need more CAST members on these discs a la Futurama)

I still love commentaries - I have watched the Spaced DVRAB a number of times just to enjoy the commentaries that are hallarious! Don't like documentaries much though - they tend to advertise the films more than explore them :(

The commentary on the Goonies DVD is great. When you are watching the movie you get a pop-up of the cast as they are today discussing the various aspects of the movie.

As for me. I have never been that interested on the extras. I just prefer DVD's so much more because of the higher quality picture and sound and also instant jumping to various areas of the movie / tv show.

DVD started a new explosion with people buying films and tv shows for home viewing. There's a new DVD format set to come out in a few years time. The DVD Forum which is the governing body and a collection of manufacturers working on the new DVD standard saying they are expecting DVD sales to peak in a few years time, at that time they will release the new HD-DVD format.

The directors commentary and deleted scenes and also the "travia tracks" some DVRAB give you. The trivia track on Pulp Fiction is so informative. It really must be watched.

Agreed - all the new Tarantino Special Editions (as far as I'm aware) contain a trivia track. I think of all the special features, I'd prefer to see more of these - less rambling than a director's commentary, but not as lightweight as many 'making of...' features.
