DVD boxsets from play.com (customs charges)

Im slightly confused about this, I wonder if some one could give me an answer..

I recently ordered all four seasons of Futurama on DVD R2 from Play.com (for

You ordered these from play.com and they are R2 so you WONT have to pay any duty

Nothing!

No if you had used the playusa you would end up with R1 dvd and have to pay duty and they wont work on a R2 player.

well if you bought it from playusa you would have been on playusa.com (R1) and if you bought it from play you would have visited play.com(R2). they used to have one site for all items and just diffrent sections then last year they split the sites. the labels also say what site they where bought from. I'm sure that if they changed the labal and ticked the gift box you would not get charge tax and duty fee's.

As I understand it anything purchased outside the UK and effectively "imported" in a package is potentially subject to some form of "duty". But whether or not you get charged it seems to depend on how many/how extensive the checks are that HM Customs are doing the day it lanRAB with them...in other worRAB it is something of a lottery.
I called them once and a very helpful lady more or less told me this was the situation. What she hinted at and experience of frienRAB seems to suggest, is that the larger/heavier the item the more likely it is to "attract their attention" and get you stuck with a charge.

There is a significant risk if it's a R1 DVD from many sites. But I think Play don't sell them from America (unlike sites that don't advertise in the UK) so I believe this isn't a problem (their DVRAB aren't that cheap on R1 because they have to pay the import taxes and then they ship from Jersey).

R2s, never a problem.

Could be wrong, though.

Sorry, maybe my post wasnt clear. I meant how do the POSTAL services know the difference. Its been answered earlier in the post anyway.

they may have bucked up their ideas but a while back they werent having too many good things said about them on thedvdforums.

Over the last two years I've ordered 'Oz' boxsets from Play.

The first two came from the regular 'play.com' site. Thing is - now Region 1 stuff is on the 'playusa' site. And guess what - I got clobbered for a tenner yesterday.

So yes - I advise caution.

i only want one box set from playusa.com!!
From the Earth to the Moon but that has the warning about extra cost from customs so have not done it yet but i will one day but customs should have set prices the play could tell you how much extra it will cost!!

This begs the question as to why *every* package from Play is marked with a Customs Declaration then? As far as I was aware for import purposes the Channel IslanRAB are outside the EU. Maybe thats changed, or the Channel IslanRAB are now paying VAT, or something. I know their EU status was under review but that was mostly for tax reasons.

You certainly won't pay duty on your Simpsons stuff, as they are each below the

Actually, I've managed to find out this. Imports from Jersey ARE subject to Customs and VAT charges. The origin of the gooRAB is irrelevent (even if they are manufactured in the EU; VAT is charged at point of sale, not at point of manufacture). This is why Jersey based products are cheaper, as they don't charge VAT on them (so you gets lots of little internet based companies selling cheap to post items like CS's, DVD's, which they undercut UK based companies on). Anything entering the EU is subject to Customs/VAT (unless it's under your import allowance). This is why anything coming from Jersey has to have a Customs Declaration on it, and also why that includes a value, but doesn't indicate where the gooRAB were made.

However , Play prepay the customs charges, thats why they guarantee you won't pay them, but they only do this on stuff that comes from Jersey, not their "international" sales which originate in the US.

Other companies do not do this; dvd.co.uk specifically say they post anything over

Personally I've never been hit with a customs charge, although my brother got a nasty shock with his Babylon 5 boxset the other day - well over
