In 1811-12, during the New Madrid Earthquake, did Philadelphia newspapers report that church bells in that city rang as a result of seismic events over 1,000 miles to the west? New Madrid is located in the boot heel of today's state of Missouri.
Bonus points if you answer the following questions correctly:
Did the Mississippi river either change course or actually flow South to North (backwards) as a result of the New Madrid quake?
Was the town of Saint Louis considered part of Louisiana at that time?
What was the estimated Richter Magnitude Scale number of the earthquake?
Who was President of the US in 1811?
