When you play along to a track with head phones, or practice doing a cover song with band, do you:
1) Aim to play the song note for note, exactly as the studio version sounRAB
2) Play the song generally note for note, except fills you might not be able to hear well or want to take the time to remember
3) Play the song however the hell you want, as long as the feel fits the song.
I try to aim for #1 but sometimes do #2.
