Droid flashed to cricket in triband-only area?

I bought a droid this summer from a cricket store that flashes phones. It works great and I love it. However, I moved away this summer for school to an area which shows up on the coverage map as triband-only. I would expect the droid to be able to work for any band, but I'm roaming in that area and I have to pay $5 for 30 minutes, and there is no mobile internet.
I would love to be able to use 3G and unlimited talk when I'm at school, and I have a few options, but I'm not sure which I should go with, or if there are any better options.

1) I could go with verizon, but it would cost twice as much, I don't know if I could keep my number, and I don't even know if I could use my phone if it's already rooted and flashed. Or, I could flash my phone to a local provider that is cheap, like MetroPCS (Tyler, TX area), but I really don't know what providers are available, or if you can flash a droid to metropcs. And I want to keep my number :P

2) I could get a cheap triband phone so I can call people at school, but it would be a pain to text people, and I wouldn't have all my 527 contacts. I also couldn't use all the features of my droid when I'm in town, I can only use some of its features with wifi, making my droid rather useless.

3) I paid $300 for this phone, but they'll buy it back for $50 and I can get a $150 cricket triband android phone. I like the droid a lot, it has a lot of features and I think its more powerful than cheaper android phones... plus, I don't have $100. I downgraded to the $35 plan and I'm still mysteriously getting 3G and everything when I'm in town... I know if I got a cricket android phone, id have to get the android plan which is $55 a month.

4) I could keep everything that I have -- my droid, my number, and paying $35/mo + $5 for 30 min. roaming... and just use sipdroid+google voice when I'm in wifi range so I don't have to use roaming minutes. I still haven't found the perfect combination of tools to do that, there's a lot of voice delay...
