looking for a new phone, I've more less narrowed down to these 2 phones

I want:

- GSM 850, 1900 (2100 is bonus)
- hotspot
- 800mhz+
- physical keyboard
- android
- 720P video would be nice

any insight or opinions are welcome

Droid 2 Global doesn't have GSM. It has 2100 UMTS as an option but much of its bands are CDMA. Instead, the phone you should be considering in its place would be the Milestone 2, which is practically the same thing but all GSM. I don't know if the Milestone 2 has a Canada version though, which you need UMTS 850 and 1900.

This leaves you with the Desire Z.

The droid 2 is a CDMA phone and doesn't have GSM but the Global version has CDMA 800, 1900/GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900/UMTS 850, 1900, 2100.

The Global also gets a few minor upgrades including a

-a processor bump upto 1200Mhz
-a battery bump to 1420 mAh

So my trade off between the HTC and Moto is an extra 400Mhz or 720P aside from any UI differences

I stand corrected.

Usually the UI tastes are the deciding factor between Motorola and HTC, and the latter usually wins it. But I feel the Droid 2 Global has better hardware, and as brands goes, both are similar in user satisfaction levels.

The problem is that the Droid 2 Global is sold by Verizon only and that's in the US, while your handle indicates you are in Canada. The Desire Z from Bell Canada would be convenient. For the Droid 2 Global to work on the Canadian network, you have to buy it from Verizon without a contract, which is expensive, and then have it unlocked so it can work with any other SIM. The SIM slots on the Verizon global phones are meant to work with Vodafone, Verizon's European and global partner, who also owns a large share of Verizon.
