Hi, I am planning to go up to Tahoe this weekend but I have some concerns about getting there. I drive a 1996 Honda Accord. The brakes are ok and the tires arent balding yet. Will it be able to make it up to Tahoe and back without any problems ? I have never driven in areas where you need snow chain, dont know how my car would handle it. THANKS

they may have a chain check, on the way if it snowing. if you dont have them, the you wont be allowed to continue. call the highway info # and ask them. If you have poor tires you very likely will have problems if there is snow and ice om the roads.
If decide to get new tires remember to buy tires that say M/S on the side. they are like normal street tires but are rated for Mud&Snow.
I used to go there all the time from SF area.

Dont do it at night, daytime only this time of year.

you don't change your tires when your tire is bald, you change them when the tread is low. if its already past the wear indicators, your asking for trouble if trying to drive in snow.

snow chains would help, but you also have to think about stopping the car. snow chains help with acceleration and you should only use them on the driven wheels. they also can't be used over a certain speed and can be a hassle to put on.
