Driving Car without Key - Faulty Equipment?

I have a 2007 Chevrolet Aveo Lt and the other day, I was at a friends house and it was late so I used my after market remote start to get the vehicle warmed up before putting the kids in the car.

After the kids were buckled in, I must have not been thinking clearly and proceeded to put my foot on the brake, Shift into REVERSE and back out of her driveway, then turn and put my foot on the brake and shift into DRIVE and proceed down the road.

My car's remote start is designed to shut off after 10 minutes and its supposed to shut off if you even bump the brake accidentally and its NOT supposed to shift WITHOUT pressing the brake and its NOT supposed to steer without the key! WTH?!?!!

I ONLY noticed I hadn't put the key in the ignition when my car suddenly DIED on the road and shut off completely. As I panicked, and reached to turn the key, I realized the key was STILL IN MY POCKET!

This is NOT supposed to happen! I usually warm my car up or cool it off before putting my kids in the car.. now I'm scared my car is going to be stolen if I do that. My manufacturer warranty is expired, the total care package I bought to extend refused to do jack crap and this probably wouldn't be covered anyhow since it was installed at the dealership after the car was sold...

Any ideas on what could be causing this and how to fix it? I found a Cadillac online that apparently was doing something similar but no answer was given... ANY help would be much appreciated!
