Driving and exploring the UK this Summer! what car to buy/use?

I'm 20, male and planning to drive around the UK to explore it basically. I plan to live in the car at most places if I can't stay at people i know. I will try to minimise costs by not living in a b and b or other hotels.

What car would be the best for me in this situation? A car that is strong, holds at least 4 people and gives A GREAT MILEAGE (mpg)?
 
A Camper van would be a good choice, if you put what kind of budget you have it would help people give you a better answer,

Obviously get a diesel car as well as you will get better MPG
