Driving a european car in America (california) question..?

If I wanted to buy a european car (specifically a Opel Ampera) and I wanted to drive it in the US, could I? I heard there are standards they have to follow and I'm not sure if it would be legal to drive the european car in America. Where is a place I can order one and ship it to the US and get it checked and legal to drive here?
