...recurrent episodes of numbness and? Dr. Smith admits 79-year-old female admitted to hospital for evaluation of recurrent episodes of numbness and weakness of LUE. She has noted that she had similar episodes about 2 weeks ago, in which the numbness and weakness came on suddenly and for 10–15 minutes each time she had complete paralysis and numbness of the left arm. There was no speech impairment, no involvement of the face or leg, and no headache. After 10–15 minutes, the symptoms resolved completed. She has a rather extensive medical history that consists of hypertension since age 35, left putamen hemorrhage 2 years ago, right meningioma. She has also had about 8 episodes of loss of right peripheral vision over the last 10 years with the last episode 4 months ago. A carotid doppler study recently showed moderate calcified plaque in the right carotid bulb. More significantly, there was no flow in the left internal carotid artery. Repeat CT scan shows an old infarction involving the left basal ganglia. A detailed past medical history was obtained including operations, allergies, medications, tobacco and alcohol use. A review of systems was completed. Patient’s mother is deceased from heart disease; father had multiple strokes; three children are alive and well.
