completely covered? dr harry, i have 2 cats that love to claw at my $4000 leather lounge suite, it is completely covered but they still seem to destroy it. i dont want to get rid of my cats but im starting to get desperate. how can i keep them off it. i have an old cloth recliner that they use as a scratching pole. my leather loung suite now has to be repaired at a very expensive cost. please help me

maybe try dabbing some lemon juice, they hate it. or get a fabric couch cover for them.
To punish them for it, put some rocks in a milo tin and shake it violently at them when in the "act". the loud noise scares them. you'll need to be persistant, but it works! they really hate it.

Get them scratching posts. Try that first. Then get them nail caps. Don't declaw them please. Spray repellent around the sofa. It's just a sofa, is it really worth your cat's being thrown out? That's like someone throwing their kid out because he keeps wetting the bed. Just keep working at it.

But them an actual scratching pole... It's as easy as that really, and lots of new toys they can play with.

ok first, cats will scratch at anything near doors and windows into the house, it is a cat's way of marking their territory, (like a dog peeing on every pole they come to).

second they don't understand that they can scratch at one and not the other.

third, if you get them a scratching pole, and when they scratch at the funiture disipline them, eg a tap on the paw or nose, and when they scratch at the pole praise them eg. give them a treat or a pat.

I had this same problem, I bought them a scratching post, but they didn't like it, so they kept scratching the new furniture, I found these things: They work miracles. But you have to keep up on them.
