In just 19-minutes Tuesday, Jodi Arias asked the jury to spare her life, contrary to previous statements she had made in television interviews regarding her preference to the death penalty.
“I didn't know that if I got life, there are many things I can do to affect positive change and contribute in a meaningful way,” the 32-year-old convicted murderer told jurors.
Arias went on to further explain that she could do things like start a book club, recycling program, teach other inmates sign language and sell “Survivor" T-shirts in hopes to help victims of domestic violence.
After watching the full statement, HLN’s Dr. Drew reacted, “I'm not sure the jurors are going to want her to have a satisfying, gratifying life of service … if they are to save her life.”
He added, “The one thing we did see from Jodi is extreme self-focus and narcissism. She should have just gotten treatment before when she was just a sick person. Now she’s a criminal Ultimately, I think she believes that [Travis] had it coming and that is disgusting.”
Dr. Drew also mentioned that Arias “didn't throw herself on the mercy of anybody.”
“She didn't say, ‘I'm so, so sorry,’" he noted. “I knew it would be unsatisfying somehow. I wanted to see her beg for forgiveness from these people.”
The jury continues to deliberate over whether they should sentence Arias to death via lethal injection. They'll resume at 1:00 p.m. ET Wednesday.
Arias was convicted of first-degree murder two weeks ago in the brutal slaying of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander.
