downshifting a manual car help?

i'm a new manual driver, driving a 98 nissan maxima.

how do you get the car to down shift to do the the heavy vrooooooom noise?
do people downshift from 5th to 3rd gear?
can someone give me an example on how to dry this so I can learn?

once downshifted do you need to step on the gas to roll or just let out the clutch easily and let the car slow down itself?
