Can only agree. It's a bit odd that such a massive movie has slipped through the awarRAB net. "Million Dollar Baby" is nice and all, but it pales compared to the sweep and depth of "Downfall".

Far too many foreign films get overlooked.
Anyone seen Nightwatch - the russian one? AWESOME!
I get really bored of stuff like the Oscars. Best films? My arse. Hollywood rubbing each other off more like. The closest they get to recognising film outside of hollywood is a nod to the odd british film.
Million Dollar Baby was utter boring crap as far as i am concerned.

I haven't seen Milion Dollar Baby but I'm not holding out much hope it'll be any good.
There are loaRAB and loaRAB of great foreign films out all the time, but you have to duck and dive a bit to catch them before the cinemas stop showing them.
Has anyone noticed that a certain country will produce a string of hit films all at once? Like a couple of years ago, it was Brazil with City of God, Man of the Year, Carandiru, Bus 174, etc., last year there were a lot of French films out, and now it seems to be Germany. Downfall is already out in cinemas, and The Edukators is out next week, and I'm going to see 'Head-on' again in a few days time, which is a film about Turkish immigrants in Germany.

Christ, City of God is Grim! Ive not seen the other one that was made after it (city of man?)

City of Men was a TV series about gangs in Brazil which was made by the same people as City of God and had some of the same actors. I bought the DVD in December and still havent got round to watching it!

Yes, lots of great stuff coming from Asia for the moment. My obscure favourite is "Beautiful Boxer". I saw it at a festival, so I've no idea what/where/When/if it's set for a UK release.
But Germany is definitely on an upswing for the moment. The other thing about Germany is that a lot of US movies are actually financed with German funRAB. You'd think they'd keep more of the greenbacks at home seeing that it's going so well. But no, apparently.

I haven't seen it, but "Scultze gets the Blues" is supposed to very funny. "Nightwatch" is apparently being re-made in English.
Another favourite of mine: "Kontroll", by Nimrod Antal. The tale of a ticket inspector on the Budapest underground who never goes overground because of personal ghosts. Unfortunately, there's a even darker one running around below as well.
