Double Charged for a tank of gas

Last month, I was accidentally double charged by a filling station for a tank of gas totaling just under $40. Needless to say, when the station itself didn't credit the money back to my account like they said they would, I called my bank and disputed the charge.

So, I got this notice from Bank Of America in the mail that basically says that because they were 2 separate transactions, they were both valid. Of course they were 2 separate transactions. That's how I was double-charged. Interesting that there were 2 identical such charges for unleaded gasoline within 2 minutes of each other. That's something I like to call "impossible."

I called the bank and they say I have to mail them a letter explaining how I was double charged and any evidence I can supply. Needless to say, it looks like I'm screwed. I'm changing banks. Bank of America: :thumbsdn: :mfinger:

What gets me is that both charges were indisputably for the exact same amount of the exact same gasoline at the exact same pump only 2 minutes apart. Tell me this: Can you pump $39.42 exactly in gasoline, 2 times in 2 minutes on the exact same pump? The very notion is idiotic to say the least.

This is also the end of my purchasing gas from ConocoPhillips.

You have to get ahold of the better business buro and get them involved. Any time you have something that is clearly bullshit, but the compainies involved are making it evident that you will be paying for it, the BBB comes in and threatens to fine them.

Wow! I hadn't thought of calling the BBB. Come Monday, that's exactly what I'll be doing. I'm still changing banks after the 1st, though. I won't stand for being swindled by my own bank. Not for 40 dollars, not for 4 dollars.

The BBB only gets involved if the company is WITH the bbb, otherwise all they'll do is log it.

But all gas stations have video surveillance. you should be able to speak to a manager and request a copy of the tape. They should have a record of $40 over in their till from that night, since no gas was purchased, and their video should prove you only filled up once. You'll need to bring it to a manager though, and if he doesn't want to help, go to a chain, tell THEIR manager, and they'll get the DM involved.

Why didn't they refund you the money at the gas station? WTF? Thats complete bullshit. Why wouldn't the cashier, with some common sense, go 'OH hey, I double-charged you, let me refund your money.'?

That really makes me mad, and it's not even my problem.

It wasn't an immediately obvious error. It was only after reviewing my bank statement later on the next day that I caught onto the problem. Another complication was that I was out of town shopping when I fueled up, so it's not like I was just down the street. In fact, I haven't been back since they double-charged me. When I called the station, the manager swore to me that he would hand carry the receipts to have the charge reversed. Of course a week later, it was obvious that he was blowing smoke up my ass and had no intention whatsoever of reimbursing me.

My bank was the last resort, and they failed as well. I guess I have to take $40 worth of pain out of the manager.

That's a bit of a problem for me as it's a bit of a drive from here. I might have mentioned I was out of town when it happened, but I just might find myself making the drive Monday if it means I can rectify this idiotic clusterfuckfest.

Had I the option, I would have done that LAST time. Next time the machine doesn't kick me out a receipt, I'm just going to drive the fuck off.

simple.. unload back on the bank that yes its two seperate charges but for the same tank of gas to the same exact amount. if they dont refund the money that constitutes bank fraud and you will have thier FDIC insurance pulled as well as being investigated by the banking commission.

Believe me, I've got a lot to say to the bank, and this is great advice as well. I hope it will be as effective as it sounds.
