Don't you think that children should be encouraged to join some sort of group where

they can learn social...? ...skills as well as gain confidence outside of the increasingly academically orientated hothouse of the school situation.
I don't mean just some *activity* like martial arts or whatever to which they are just ferried by car and then ferried home again (although that is better than nothing!) but a *group* where they can work with other children towards a goal.
My own boys were in the cubs and scouts and they got a lot out of it and so did I as they went off on camp and gave me a break!
For the less boisterous a drama group would be ideal as they work towards some form of production which their parents (hopefully) will then attend and see a different side of their child and give him the praise that he needs for his talent even though he may be struggling at school.
Even my third who was not really cut out for cubs got a lot out of it as I made him go until he found another activity on the same night - a swimming club and they too went off as a group for tournaments and such ..
