Don't you just want to slap the parents of little kids who have cell phones?

My best friend's little sister wants a cell phone and she is only 9! I know a lot of little kids who want cell phones! They probably just want to be older and stuff, but they are NOT responsible enough. I can understand emergencies, such as kids with diabetes who need to constantly contact parents or kids who's parents always work, but just for calling friends and texting is ridiculous! The appropriate age for a cell phone is 12 because that's when most kids enter middle school and you're not allowed to use school phones in middle school. I think it's stupid though how some kids can't have cell phones until high school. Not even a prepaid one. Because their parents think they are irresponsible and blah blah blah, but what if they need to contact someone? Borrowing a friend's cell phone is rude because you are using up their minutes that they are paying for. What's your opinion? When did you get your first cell phone? When will you give your kids their first cell phone??
 
I think a pre-paid one is fine for anyone under like 11. I got my first cell phone at age 11 years old and I personally think it's great, no matter what age, because what would happen if the child were to get lost or something..that way their always a call away - and the parents don't have to be so nervous. Parents/the owner of the phone contract can also disable certain features on the phone (texting, apps, web, etc.) and just have it for calling or something.
 
i think kids as young as 9 can have mobiles, just not on contract and the credit should be limited, also not top of the range phones, the ones that are about £20/30
i had my first proper phone about that age and so did a majority of my friends and younger member of my family
 
I got mine at 16, my mom said when I can pay the bill myself I can have one.....

I will probably let my child have one at age 8 or 9 because of the world today. There's too many missing and abducted children and I feel that it would help to a certain extent. You can always get restrictions on the phone. T mobile has a flex plan where you pick the mins, amount of text and everything on it and can NEVER go over because it won't let you go over your mins or texting, so your bill is ALWAYS the same..I will probably do something like that for my child, only mins, no texting.
 
I got mine when I was 12.
I think its important that kids have phones in case of emergencies. Mine's been really helpful.

Though that's why my brother (got his at 10) got his...and he never carries it with him when we need him, yet he gave us a $450 texting bill.

...I guess it depends on the child/parent. =]
 
I got my phone when I was 11, only because my birthday's in December. So basically when I was 12.
I only used to call home a couple times for a ride or to say I'd be late, and I never started texting any one until I was about 13. Right now, I've not got a phone though. I couldn't pay the bill anymore and I don't even have enough money to buy a phone and get prepaid on it.
If I ever have kids, it will depend on their maturity level. Most likely between 10 and 14 though.

I don't necessarily want to slap them, but, yeah, it aggravates me, too. I got my first cell phone when I was 18 because I had a job and paid for it all myself. I don't plan on ever buying my kids a cell phone...though who knows what things will be like in, say, 2020....maybe you'll have to buy your kid a cellphone before they let you take him home from the hospital. My husband and I don't even have cellphones ourselves. People have gotten by without them for years. I admit, they're probably a God-send in an emergency, but I have yet to experience a time when I would have died without a cell phone (I'm still here, aren't I?). So, yes, I think cell phones for children are ridiculous.
