Our dog a dalmation / bird dog mix (or something) whines at bed time next to the baby bed where our 2 week infant is sleeping. She (dog) has done it for about 3 nights in a row. She acts like she wants to tell us something but can't. She eventially calms down and goes to sleep.

Needless to say it is freaking us out a little!!!!

Dog is 2 yrs old. We also have a 6 y/o child so the dog gets plenty of attention. Dog only whines when she wants something (I.E.- I want what your eating, I want to go out, I want in you lap,etc...). She looks at the baby bed and whines. Maybe because she can't see in there? During the day she watches over them both but doesn't whine or anything. I guess she could need to be reassured that the baby is in fact where he should be? Thank you for all of your answers!

The dog could be worried that the baby might suffocate, so she is protecting him. She might not like it that she can't see the baby. She might think that the baby is hers and she wants him with her. There are many things.

take your baby in to the doc for FULL screening for everything a baby that age can get. animals have a 6th sense for this. they can sense the changes in our bodies based on the hormones we secrete from our skin.

there was a stray cat that lives in a hospice that went to the doors or people it knew where going to die that day and stayed with them all through the night to watch over them.

go get you child seen as soon as Monday comes. trust me your dog is sensing something that you and i cant see.

god bless

That is too cute! She may just be being a momma too :-)

If she doesn't whine during the day while you baby is down in her bed to sleep she may just be letting you know it's bed time...

I want a girl dog, too and I want to name her "Nanna" like in Peter Pan so she can watch over my children and do what your dog does :-)

The answer is plain and simple. Your dog loves your kids. She is a protector. She can't see the child, therefore she can't protect her. I would suggest making a step stool or something so she could see into the bed. So she can "protect her".

check the baby's sleeping position. Make sure the baby can breath properly on sleeping time.

keep your dog out of your baby's room, not only is it not safe but its not healthy either. No animals should be allowed into a baby's room.

There have been cases of dogs taking the baby out of the crib and killing them because they are jealous of the baby.

Either keep the door closed or put a baby gate across the door so the dog can't get in and only allow the dog around the baby when you are in the same presence as well.

Dogs do odd things but there could be many reasons for this behavior. She seems like a good dog though. Maybe she is worried about the baby sleeping by his or her self. Dogs sleep in packs and sleep with there young. I would continue to check on the baby every night in case she is trying to tell you something. Congratulations on your new baby.

Keep the dog away from the baby at night and during the day when you are not watching it. Both dogs and cats have been known to get into babies' beds to snuggle and have smothered and killed them. Also, dogs are not the most sanitary things and should be kept away until your baby is at least 2 months old.

so far I have read a lot of SWEET answers ... BUT so far the only one I would take any notice of is MRS'S K's Answer ....(sorry Michelle I only just saw your answer ) .

recently in australia ( in the last few months) we lost at least two babies due to family dogs being allowed into the room of a baby .. UNLESS you are standing right next to the crib .. DON'T RISK IT ...
If you love your dog you will not place it in a situation where the out-come is you lose IT and your child...

NO dog is 100% safe around babies .. as they are a pack animal and may feel that they have to show their dominance over the NEW pack member....

BUT .. at the end of it .. You're the Dog's owner and the baby's parent .. your choice NOT to heed Mrs K's advice or Heed it

A NEWBORN baby girl has been mauled to death by the family's pet rottweiler who attacked her in her cot today while her mother was next-door.

The nine-week-old girl suffered bites to her upper body and could not be saved despite paramedics trying for more than 90 minutes to revive her, a Metropolitan Ambulance Service (MAS) spokesman said.

Neighbours said the little girl was being cared for by her grandparents at her home while her mother went next door when the dog attacked."
Very tragic story
