My sister had to go out of country and left us(my girlfriend & myself) to babysit her 6yr old daughter and her 8yr old Alaskan Malamute. Her daughter's no trouble but the dog is the issue. This is the first time in a while(almost 2 years) that my sister has had to leave them with anyone and the last time they did stay with us but I guess her dog doesn't remember because anytime we go near my niece, the dog gets up and starts growling at us. If we even attempt to touch her,the dog will and has snapped at us. Usually the dog is nice and sweet, friendly and loving so I'm not sure what's going on this time. It doesn't matter if my niece talks to her and tells the dog that it's okay, the dog still reacts the same way. We haven't done anything to make the dog want to protect my niece so I don't get it but something has to be done about it.
Just to make sure it's clear, the dog has NEVER growled or snapped at my niece. Only my girlfriend and I. The only way that we can go near the child is if she puts the dog out back(fenced in yard). I know I should've called my sister but I don't want to bother her unless I HAVE to,she's gone on a business trip.
How do we deal with the dog?
