Dog bite WARNING.......

A pit bull dog bit my neighbor on the elbow.

She had locked herself out of her house and had gone to a neighbor's house for help. A pit bull dog they were keeping for their son bit her on the elbow.

She did not wash the area right then, waited until she was back in her house, maybe an hour later.

Within 4 hours there was an area that felt hot to the touch but she waited until the next day to see the doctor. This was too late, the bite was very infected. Today, 2 days later, her arm is red half-way above elbow to shoulder and almost down to her wrist. She has now had 3 antibiotic pills but the red area continues to spread, arm is painful.

WARNING! if you get bit by a dog or other animal or human, GO to the doctor right then, don't wait. Make sure your tetanus immunization is up to date.

Dogs, cats, and other animals plus humans have many, many germs in their mouth.

A bite is a puncture wound, hard to clean out yourself.

My son was bitten a few years back and that is the first thing they did was give him 10 days of Augmentin.

Hope your neighbors arm is okay.

How horrible. My Mother-in-law ended up in hospital after a dog bit her on the leg. She went straight to the Doctor, had it cleaned and stitched and started antibiotics but it became ulcerated. My husband came home from work one day and said he'd been bitten by a dog earlier in the day. I sent him straight to the Doctor 'cause we weren't sure when he'd had his last tetanus injection. The Doctor gave him a shot and an antibiotic cream just in case. You are so right...never ignore this type of injury. You can get an infection from an insect bight.

And cat puncture bites can be worse. I found a stray and on the day she was to be spayed, in trying to get her into a carrier, she bit me in the fleshy area between the thumb and index finger......all the way through. I got her to the vet and he told me to head to my doctor's office right then and there. But no, I waited until the office opened and called for an appointment. They told to get in the car and start driving. He looked at it and gave me a script for Augmentin and told me to soak the wound several times a day with warm salt water and call if it got worse.

The bite occurred at 7:30am. By 12noon, my whole hand was swollen and an abscess was forming in my hand and my temp had gone up to 102*. Had I not gotten to the doc as soon as I did I would have been in the hospital with surgery by evening. Cats have bacteria in their mouths that allow them to eat infected critters and not get sick. It protects them. But if gotten into the skin in us, especially in a puncture type wound, it can be very serious.

So wash every cat bite no matter how small and cover with an antibiotic cream or antibiotic infused BandAid. If it starts to swell, call your doc and get treated before you end up with having an abscess drained. It took years for the sac of fluid left in my hand to slowly go away. And NEVER tease a cat. You WILL get the worst of it. They are wonderful creatures but demand and deserve respect. Do that and you'll have the best friend ever.

A cat lover all my life.

Absolutely. Dogs, cats, and other animals have teeth that are meant to be able to tear flesh. If their bite goes deep into your skin, that is putting bacteria directly into your system in a way that normal surface cuts and scraps do not.
