My dog is an 8 month old german shepherd cross, she constantly barks and whines and howls when we are not home, I have tried an anti-bark collar, no dont worry it is the humaine one that just sprays citranella at her when she barks, I have tried placing a radio near her, a ticking clock ( she is in a crate ) I have tried puting a blanket over her crate... nothing works.. I always have a my landlord tell me she barked liked crazy... any ideas?

Practice, practice, practice.

On the weekend, when you have plenty of time to do it, leave the dog alone and in her crate. Leave a toy for her, and give her a treat. Then step outside your door and close the door. Immediately open it again and step back in. When you come back inside, let her out of her crate and praise her a whole bunch.

About an hour later, do it again, but this time, stay out for the count of five. Then later, do it again, and stay out for about 10 seconds. Keep increasing the amount of time you're outside and she's inside in the crate.

If she starts barking or whining before the time is up, go back in and tell her "No." Don't scold her or yell at her or anything like that, just tell her calmly, but with authority, "No" or "Stop" or whatever word you want to use. Then go back out again for the prescribed amount of time.

It may take more than one weekend, but if you're consistent and persistent about it, she'll soon learn that you really will come back.

Good luck!

its about the period of time when her hormones are up and down all the time causing an emotional change, its about time you should spay your dog. after spaying she should calm down much more and reduce all those whining and barking.

well my dog likes it when i leave the tv on you might think im crazy but i leave it on animal planet so they can hear other dogs on the tv it makes them feel like they are not alone try that see if it works i no it did for me =)

you might have to just let her cry and leave her to it. put her in a well-insulated room where the noise won't be as bad. she will eventually figure out crying gets her nowhere.

I have an 18mo shep. He use to do that I placed a radio, mirror and a piece of clothing of mine (for scent). Also you can try a tv. Sounds like she is very attached, like most sheps are, and needs more stimulation. Sheps need to be doing something at all times. Try some toys as well.

do you live in an appartment of something? it could be the noises from the people that live next door. my dog did this pointlessly all the time, i just wanted to rip my ears out. but this is what i did. first i tried giving him toys with hidden food in it. then a bed. eventually i put him in the crate and talked to him on the outside. as long as he was quiet i would pet him and give him a bit of food. eventually, i would leave the room for quick moments, then longer and longer. then i would leave the door open and he would stay there. repeating the leaving for longer times. eventually for me, the crate was just a waste of space. i can trust him home alone now. he doesnt cry nor distroy anything from stress because he got used to the crate and being home alone. he knows i will be back and all will be well.
