Does winning a science competition like Intel increase your chance of getting into a...

I've read some of the Intel winners' stuff; it takes A LOT. We're talking an AP understanding of the subject, plus a year of dual-enrollment classes, plus a lot of reading on your own, to just come up with some of these experiments. Then you have to actually do the experiment: you're going to need university-level equipment (though some things you can buy from specialty catologues) and a pretty large pile of money. Most of the Intel winners every year actually contribute to the progress of science, IE they solve problems that professionals have been working for years on.

On the plus side, since there are only 10 winners or so on earth, you're pretty much guaranteed to get into a genuinely awesome school.
