does verizon wireless work in mexico?? please help !?

so i have the samsung omnia 2 from verizon wireless and i activated international roaming yesterday in the verizon store . the lady told me it should work in mexico but that i would be roaming.. but i have heard from some of my other friends that have verizon n they told me verizon doesnt work in mexico that good when ur roaming and others have told me it works just fine so im confused.. i will be going to mexico city for a business trip this saturday and i would like to be able to make calls back to the states while im in mexico with my phone.. i had t-mobile before but my contract finished and i know that t-mobile works perfect in mexico cause i had used it before the only thing is that the roaming was expensive.. so does any one know if verizon will work in mexico? i really need to know please cause like i said im leaving this saturday n i have no time to buy an unlocked phone thanks best answer 10 points ..
