Does unlocking an Iphone 3g give you free cell phone service?

I found an Iphone 3G the other day, went home, jailbroke it and unlocked it. When I unlocked it, it started saying "no service" and when I click T-Mobile, it says "Cellular service restricted". This poses the obvious question, does unlocking an Iphone 3G give you free cell phone service? If not, how do I get free services, or can i?
