Does unlocking a HD 6950 BIOS to a 6970 have any repercussions?

I was going to put a HD 6870 in my computer, but I saw that the 6950 might be more modern and last longer therefore saving me $ in the long run. However I have heard some good(?) news about the 6950. Apparently you can "unlock" it and change the BIOS to make it work almost exactly like a 6970, and save yourself 70$ in 5 minutes.

I was wondering if this would shorten the lifespan of the GPU, or have any other ill wanted effects since many sites that talk about this say "do at your own risk". I was wondering if it was safe to do this and if it wouldn't affect my card in the long run.

Thank you.
