I'm making a collage for a civics project. It is for the 16th president of the United States president, Abraham Lincoln. The collage is supposed to show Lincoln's legacy. I am thinking of using this picture in my collage, however, I cannot tell if it shows Lincoln doing a really good thing by freeing the slaves, or doing a really bad thing by whipping the slaves. I'm really not sure, the picture isn't too clear for me, so I need a second opinion. Or third. Or fourth. What is your opinion? :]

That is the picture.

Please and Thank you! :]

You have to take the times into consideration. It's hard to conceive of the hardships of slavery but judging from the pic the slave is very grateful for being set free by Mr. Lincoln. I believe this was an editorial drawing depicting emancipation rather than a real picture.

The picture would represent Lincoln freeing slaves which is a popular myth. The truth is Lincoln never freed anybody. His successor, Andrew Johnson, actually was president when the 13th Amendment was ratified by Congress on Dec. 6th, 1865, which ended slavery in the United States and its territories. In passing the 13th to free slaves, the old 13th was repealed which Lincoln DID sign in 1861 and which protected slavery forever. If you truly want to show Lincolns legacy, show government involvement in businesses, bailouts of businesses that cannot make it due to mismanagement, U.S. involvement in foreign affairs such as WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Cuba, Central America, as well as increasing taxes, an enormous and overreaching federal government that becomes the peoples master rather than being a servant of the American people. That's what Lincoln did for us. He wasn't a kind and benevolent leader but a despotic tyrant that started a war and killed over 2 million of his own people in order to gain power for himself and the federal government. He imprisoned those who disagreed with him without the right of due process and shut down hundreds of newspapers who dared to print the truth of his actions. He would have the owners, editors and writers imprisoned and the presses smashed and the offices burned. find a copy of the book "American Bastille" by John A. Marshall and you will see the truth about Lincoln written by his victims. He was a truly evil man and the fact that his 200th birthday is being celebrated by more myth making instead of telling the truth about his policies and actions is disgusting to me.
