Does this ever work in a court of law regarding homosexuality?

I recently read a story about a man who murdered two gay men in the states years ago claiming that he was only following what was said in the scriptures. After being arrested for the murders he told his lawyer that he planned to quote the bible and it's scriptures as his defense for what he had done. Has this ever been done and been effective?

I'm just wondering has this ever been effectivly used in court in any case where a homosexual was harmed or killed?

I know here in Ireland the the "guilty but insane" verdict is used quiet a bit (not in hate crimes though) so I'm just wondering if it works in the states?
