Does this count as a sonnet or not?

Ok, so my last creative writing professor said this poem I wrote isn't a sonnet even though it follows the rhyme pattern and meter of a Shakespearian sonnet exactly. I don't know why. Is it a sonnet? If not, why?
here's the poem:

OF A BROKEN HEART'S RECOVERY

I touchted the fire and I was burnt to black
Within my heart the anguish grew to hate
So on the face of love I turned my back
And closed my heart before it was too late

I prayed for mercy from the Most High God
That I may never burn with love again
My soul was far too many times downtrod'
And not a soul could fathom my great pain

So now my loves have turned to friendships dear
My fickle frozen heart does not feel love
Instead I feel the care for people near
As if I were a nesting mourning dove

Ah, may I never die by love again!
Let passion within my heart no more reign!
