Does the T-mobile Mytouch have to have the dataplan to work?

Ok, so the tmobile rep keeps telling me i am required to buy the data plan or else the mytouch is useless,
but ive read online that if you buy the data plan you can cancel it easily the next month and the mytouch should still work but with less features
but the tmobile rep keeps telling me this is untrue.
help please?!
