than it does Gays? Lets assume for a moment that Gays and Christians are two completely separate groups...

Gay people want us to believe that sexuality is not a choice and that they are born the way they are.

Christians want us to believe that we are given the choice to behave in ways which are either moral or immoral.

Now - if science discovered a "gay gene" or some kind of proveable factor in sexuality being pre-determined, would the social effect hold stronger implications for the gays or the Christians?

Gays might feel validated and have stronger support for being treated as equals, but I think the implications would be an absolute travesty for the Christian religion.

Christians would be hard-pressed to legislate morality on any level and there would be no room for them in the legislative process because it would be like "3rd strike and you're out" after having denied so many other groups their rights in the past.

Furthermore, any Christians who attempted to make PC changes to the Bible would be held up as liars and manipulators. The integrity of all that has been written in the Bible would be up for debate.

What do you think?

Do you think Religious people fight gay rights because they feel threatened?

they just stripped the last of the anti-mixed race marriage laws in some of the more southern US states less than 10 years ago now. And voted down an anti-gay law last month. Not to even mention 150 years of research to support evolution.

I hate to say it, especially as a gay man. These types will not look to science for truth. They will look to whatever supports the hate in their own hearts.

All they want is an excuse and validation to choose to hate and segregate sections of society they don't agree with. They don't have a quest for the truth.

Implications, schmiplications! Gay marriage is about civil rights. I think marriage is a failed and useless institution; civil rights are inviolable.

It doesn't matter if it is a choice. We are living in the USA. The constitution is a secular document in which the pursuit of happiness is written. As long as ones rights don't infringe on anothers rights or safety it should be allowed. The government and the IRS should get out of marriage. If you want a legal contract, go through a lawyer. If you want it santioned by a god have a religous ceremony.

I think Christians won't care if there is a gay gene or not. They will say (if there is a gay gene and sexual orientation is proved to be something one is born with) that they will have to deny themselves the satisfaction of a healthy sexual relationship with someone they love in order to 'get into heaven'

I've had it said to me in that way.

They shouldn't be threatened... There is plenty of room in the Bible for acceptance and unconditional love, but they instead focus on enforcing rules, that not even they can agree on let alone the rest of society. Any implications they suffer from the research scientist make are brought on themselves by themselves.

I think the religious fight gay rights because they are either total bigots or deep down closet homosexuals.

a gay gene wow is that like the fat gene and its not your fault you eat all day you were born to be fat
you above me i think that was the best answer i have heard

Nope. The decision to act on those feelings is still a choice.
If pedophilia was shown to be genetic would you fight for their rights to sleep with 9 year-olds?

Edit:
Sophie-
I wasn't comparing you to anyone. But your hypothesis is if it's genetic then it is fine. According to this logic if pedophilia is genetic pedophiles should be able to engage in their "natural" lifestyle.

NO I don't think they fight gay rights because they feel threatened.

It would not effect christians if science proved there was a gay gene. God is still God, no matter what science says.
