Does the Honda Insight ever operate without using gasoline?

I notice that the display sometimes indicates that no power is coming from the engine, yet the tachometer still shows the engine is turning. Does that mean the engine is entirely operating off batteries and no gasoline is being used?

The first model was all electric.
the new model is a hybrid.
