Does the Blackberry Bold 9700 need internet?

My 2-year contract is going to be up in January, and I'll be able to update my phone. I was looking at the Blackberry Bold 9700. I like it, and its a free phone right now with an update. So, I was wondering if it requires internet like the iPhone does?
