does sitting forward on a recumbent bike work different muscles?

I gained like 5 pounds so I started watching what i eat more and exercising harder. I find that sitting forward on my recumbent bike makes my heart beat faster cause I can pedal faster without putting so much stress on the front portion on my thighs. But still my pants seem like they are getting harder to fit into around the waist even though i've started loosing. I wondered if maybe sitting forward is working my lower abs more?
