No Need to worry about reel weight from a pier- you dont need to cast too far, you essentially can drop your line straight down. The biggest concern from a pier is how to get the fish up the pier. You need a drop net or a long handled net or gaff. You cant rely on your fishing line to haul the fish out of the water and onto the pier. You also risk ripping the fish`s lip and losing it.
I also fish with 2 rods- one for bait to let it sit out and the other to throw lures. Sometimes they`ll only hit surface poppers or bucktails bounced off the bottom. My Bait rod is usually shorter and heavier, almost like a boat rod. and my lure rod is light and long to allow the lure to get out there. 2 different reels one really light the other is heavy. So reel weight isnt really a problem.
