Does playing Blu-Ray Discs on the Playstation 3 ruin the system?

I remember playing a lot of DVDs on my old PS2 ruined the laser or something and eventually ruined the system causing me to buy a new one. This has occurred with a few friends of mine also. I was curious if this was the case with the new PS3?
