Does paint in a can change color over time? Also: patching hole in wall?

So I kicked a hole in the wall and I'm going to patch it up...The previous owners left some paint they used for the walls (I don't know when they did it but I've been living here for nearly a year) so if I applied the paint over the patch, would the colors exactly match?

Also, do I NEED to put primer over the patched hole? What exactly is the point of primer and what would happen if I didn't use it on the patch?
