Does our body know what it wants (needs) to eat or does it simply eat what it's given?

In respect of fats, protein and carbohydrates does our body simply process what you give it into energy or is there some component programmed somewhere in the human psyche that will tell you to eat a certain food, for example if you see a potato it thinks carbs. I guess it also depends on the humans understanding of nutrition for the body to possibly produce a hormonal(?) response in the brain influencing them to eat something. Not taking into consideration cravings for junk food such as chocolate bars, although it is interesting that chocolate is stated to make you feel happy due to the increase in endorphins(?).

Of course all of what I have said is just speculation and I am interested in what others have to say, discuss.
N.B. As stated, this isn't about cravings. It's about food choices as a whole. Furthermore everyone knows eating a balanced diet is healthy but this isn't what im trying to discuss, maybe I posted this in the wrong category, where people are just going to say eat healthy.

No, we crave things regardless of whether or not we need them. If you eat sweets, your blood sugar goes up. When it goes down again, you crave sweets, although that is the last thing you should eat. Caffeine also triggers a desire for sweets. The best thing is to eat a balanced diet using your brain. Some people crave red meat and salt even though their chloresterol and blood pressure may both be through the roof
