Does Nascar use GPS systems to keep track of the cars as they go around?

I have a bet with a co-worker and I think I remember my uncle (die hard fan) telling me that the cars have GPSs installed in the hoods or something so that nascar officials can keep track of how many laps behind cars are etc.

Please help me out.
