Does "nai" and mean anything by itself in Japanese?

I understand how to use it in negative phrases such as "-dewa nai desu", but I'm wondering if it has a meaning on its own. I'm assuming it's just used to create a negative...But I want to be sure. Can you use it in a sentence if it's used in other ways aside from coming before negative forms of "desu"?
