Does media overreaction to the superflu save lives?

This is obviously a loaded question, but state your agreement or objections. The 1918 Spanish flu killed millions but received virtually no press coverage due to government censorship. If the media ignored the current swine flu outbreak, would world governments feel as obliged to show they are taking active measures to prevent it?
