Does Mazda miata MX5 really save gas?

My friend told me that people misunderstand about small cars like MX5 save gas. He said Miata Mx5 is type of car for fun but not for saving gas purpose. Is that true? Thank you
 
The MX5 is a sports car. It isn't heavy on fuel when driven normally, around 30 mpg, but being a sports car you almost cannot help driving it in the manner in which it was intended.
The next generation Mazda Miata MX5 will be a fuel miser as it will get the 1.3 or 1.5 litre Sky-G direct injection motor giving as much power as the current 2 litre but using a lot less fuel
