Does martial arts truly help?

There was a fight today between a 5.6" Asian kid that weights 105lbs and he's a Junior in High School against a football player who is about 6.2" and benches 215lbs who is a Sophomore. We thought the Asian kid was going to get slaughtered but he did very quick and agile kicks to the guys stomach, made him slouch over a little, and jump kicked him across the face. The Asian kid claims hes a black belt in karate and a red belt in tae kwon do. Does martial arts REALLY help or did the kid get lucky from getting the first hit? Does strength really matter when it comes to martial arts?
