Does lifting weights stunt growth?

Im taking a weight lifting class at school. We are doing squats, military presses, dead-lifts, and benching, etc. and then I asked my coach who is very built and knows alot about weight training, if wightlifting stunts growth, he said it does the opposite and helps you grow faster. Yet I hear rumors that it actually stops it. Which is correct? Im 16 and 5'11.
