Does Kali take too long to learn as a martial arts?

Its because I take Kali at a martial arts academy, and I have been training in it for a year now or possibly more?

The training started as footwork, stick, sometimes mano a mano, and very rarely sparring. I fear that I wasted my time in it.
EDIT: Is it because of the student or the teacher?
