usually they dont charge you for looking the car, but some mechanics usually charge you

it depends to where you go

Some places I've had it done for free, some charge upwards of $100.
My best advice would be to call around, or if you have a place in mind that you would want to fix it once it's been looked at, call them ask for an inspection. They will ask what's going on with the car, and normally tell you to bring it in to them.
Most good places though will do it for nothing, in hopes of getting the real business from you.

My car is acting strange and I want to have it looked at. Does it usually cost anything to have a mechanic look at your car without doing anything to it?

Ask them. Some places do , others not. Ask for references from friends and/or family to avoid being ripped off! ;-)=

Can you go to the doctor and have your tonsils looked at for free?

Shops are in business to make money. Mechanics have families, mortgages, and bills to pay as well as anyone else. I will usually "look at" my regular customers problems at no charge because I know they will eventually allow me to do the repairs that may be needed.

If someone "off the streets" comes in and wants me to spend a half hour or more of my time to diagnose their car problems (so they will know what to fix themselves) I will, but at the $65.00 an hour shop rate.

Shops that use "Service Advisors" (which is a joke) will look for free, but those guys usually aren't mechanics and most get paid based on the repairs they sell.

a lot of places will take the time to look at it and tell you what,s wrong but the thing is, can you believe them? some places will tell you anything just to get the work and your money.
