Does getting to know people you are going to college with makes you a creeper?

Okay, so I am going to college for the first time in the fall and I got a facebook so I could be able to meet some of the girls going to my college with me. I added the girls that I know are going and started talking to them about where they are rooming at and asked them to tell me a little about themselves and that I would do them the same to get communication going. Two of the girls were talking to each other about "a creeper" commenting on their walls like I was doing. Really is it that creepy to do? Is it wrong to be interested in befriending people you are going to college with?
